Mpumalanga —The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has flagged a total of 103 vehicles as unroadworthy in a series of operations conducted across the province.
In addition, 121 vehicles have been impounded for serious traffic offences. These violations include driving without a valid license, lacking necessary permits, operating potentially stolen or illegally imported vehicles, and using fraudulent documentation, as well as those without proper registration or display discs.
The department emphasised that these actions are part of ongoing initiatives by traffic law enforcement officers aimed at reducing lawlessness and enhancing road safety during the festive season. More than 30,000 vehicles were stopped and inspected, with approximately 8,463 of those weighed to check if their loads were compliant. Additionally, over 4,600 traffic summonses were issued to drivers for a range of violations.
The department noted that these operations will persist throughout the holiday period. “Traffic law enforcement officers will maintain their strong commitment into the coming week as we approach school closures. We will remain relentless against unroadworthy vehicles and those carrying excessive loads,” they said in a statement.
MEC Jackie Macie encouraged all drivers, vehicle owners and public transport operators to make certain their vehicles are well-maintained and that any problems are addressed before they set off on their journeys.
“It is the responsibility of every owner to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times. Failure to attend to defects poses danger not only to the driver but also to others. Law enforcers must clamp down on unroadworthy vehicles and force every vehicle owner to comply,” said Macie.
